“Conservation of Marine Turtles in the Mediterranean Region” website
PERSONAL DATA PROTECTION PRIVACY POLICY
(HARMONISING WITH THE EUROPEAN DATA PROTECTION REGULATION 2016/679)

The following Privacy Policy refers to the agreement where MEDASSET specifies what kind of personal data collects as the administrator of this website and for what purpose.

About MEDASSET

MEDASSET (Mediterranean Association for the Protection of the Sea Turtles) was founded in 1988 in England and 1993 in Greece. It is an international environmental NGO and a non-profit association that aims to protect sea turtles and their habitats throughout the Mediterranean, through international and national research programs, information campaigns, education and advocacy on relevant entities. Since its inception, it has been working with the UNEP/MAP Mediterranean Environmental Action Plan (UNEP/MAP) and has been a permanent member/observer of the Bern Convention (Council of Europe) since 1988.

About the website

The “Conservation of Marine Turtles in the Mediterranean Region” website under the domain name www.medmarineturtles.org has been created exclusively by MEDASSET for the purposes of the MAVA M7 Project called “Conservation of Marine Turtles in the Mediterranean Region”, co-funded by MAVA Foundation.

The MAVA M7 Project communication activities are implemented by MEDASSET with the support of the Direct and National Partners across the Mediterranean Region and under the guidelines of the European Data Protection Regulation (2016/679 EU).

The Project

The project “Conservation of Marine Turtles in the Mediterranean Region” that is funded by the MAVA Foundation, aims primarily to enhance the protection of marine turtles within the Mediterranean region by reducing human induced direct mortality. The regional project includes the following direct partners: ARCHELON, DEKAMER, MEDASSET, MedPAN, NMPZ, RAC/SPA (leader), WWF Greece, WWF Turkey.

Overall Objectives

Numerous activities will be carried out across the Mediterranean, such as

  • applied research and monitoring on known and potential nesting sites and marine hotspots
  • reinforcement of coordination through the use of standardised maps, protocols and databases
  • capacity building among turtle researchers and marine protected area managers
  • improvement of the management and protection of nesting sites
  • elaboration or update of National Action Plans
  • reduction of illegal trade of sea turtles.

MEDASSET’s Role within the Project

MEDASSET holds both a regional and national role within the “Conservation of Marine Turtles in the Mediterranean Region” project.

MEDASSET is responsible for the Communication Strategy, production of relative material, as well as the dissemination and public outreach of the project. In regional level, it also implements the Development of a Pan-Mediterranean Stranding Protocol and Database, an identified priority under the 2019 “RAC/SPA Updated Action Plan” for the Conservation of Mediterranean Marine Turtles and a Recommendation 5 in "Demography of marine turtle nesting in the Mediterranean sea: a gap analysis and research priorities" of the Demography Working Group of the “5th Mediterranean Conference on Marine Turtles” (Bern Convention T-PVS/Inf 2015 15). The project will contribute to the formulation and development of a Mediterranean network of all directly involved in national stranding networks and countries developing them throughout the Mediterranean. This will add to the optimal collection of data applying a common standardised method through a harmonised approach, hence overcoming the intercontinental characteristic of the sea and migratory life history strategy of sea turtles.

Moreover, the organisation implements research activities in national level in Albania and Greece (North Aegean).

In Greece, MEDASSET aims to increase knowledge on sea turtle distribution and occurrence across the North Aegean through a rapid questionnaire survey.  In Albania, MEDASSET implements a monitoring programme to explore potential nesting activity along its coastline and evaluate the quality of certain beaches to appraise their potential of being used as current nesting sites and in the future, in the case of spatial nesting shifts due to climate change.

Summarising up:

  • Raising public interest for sea turtles and promoting it as an emblematic species for the protection of the marine and coastal habitats of the Mediterranean.
  • Research and conservation of sea turtles and their habitats throughout the Mediterranean.
  • Identifying and highlighting environmental issues, especially in the marine ecosystem, public awareness and immediate resolution of these coordinated actions and campaigns.
  • Promote and support new conservation measures to protect the sea turtle and the marine environment in the context of national and international policies, in addition to reinforcing the existing measures.
